Sha‘lan Brunnen (Sabil Sha’lan)

The well is located in the northwestern part of the courtyard of the Al Aksa Mosque, east of Bab Al-Nazir, at the end of a paved corridor that leads to the roof of the Dome of the Rock just before climbing the steps of the northwestern escarpment.

The fountain was built by King Issa (615-624 / 1218-1227) and restored at the time of Sultan Barsbay and Minister Pyram Pasha Muhammad Pasha, Governor of the Ottoman Jerusalem. For this reason, the well is known by several names, but the most common is that of the well watcher Sheikh Sha'lan.
