Maristan or Bimaristan

This building is known among Jerusalemites as the Bazaar, and their southern facade overlooks David road. Bimaristan is a Persian word  that means ‘the medical center’ or ‘the central hospital', and that is what the building was used as during the Ayyoubid era, when Salah Eddin Al-Ayyoubi assigned it as a Waqf (religious endowment) in 583 Hijri / 1187 AD, and it remained so during the Mamluk period, until it was destroyed following an earthquake in 1458.
