Bab al-Jadid (New Gate)

The New Gate (Bab Jadid) is similar to Dung Gate (Bab al-Magharibah), being more of an opening in the Wall than an original gate. It was originally a closed wall. The opening was turned into a gate in 1899 in the era of Sultan Abdel Hamid, which is why the gate is sometimes known as Bab Abdel Hamid (Abdel Hamid Gate). Bab al-Jadid is known as such (The New Gate) due to its relatively recent construction. It was opened to facilitate the movement of residents of the northwest part of the Old City, a part that began to be built in the second half of the 19th century.
