Qubbat al-Silsilah (The Dome of the Chain)

The Dome of the Chain is located directly to the east of the Dome of the Rock, right in the center of the compound of the Holy Mosque of al-Aqsa. Its history dates back to before the building of the Dome of the Rock, before the year 72 Hijri / 691 AD.

It was founded by Caliph ‘Abed al-Malik ibn Marwan. It is said that the Dome was built as a money house to finance the building of the Dome of the Rock. Others believed that it was a prototype for the Dome of the Rock.

The naming of the Dome refers to the ancient story that claims the existence of a light chain between the sky and the Earth.

The Dome of the Chain has a polygon plan made up of eleven sides supported by marble columns, above which stands a chain of hemispherical arches. On top of the arches, sets a semi-spherical dome that is covered with lead, and from the inside, they are covered with qashani tiles.
